1930

  

A male nurse  called William PROUDLOCK dies at the Royal Victoria Infirmary  in Newcastle. A female develops enteric fever and is transferred to Walker Gate Hospital Newcastle. A Mr BROCK chairman of the Board of Control makes an unplanned vsit to the hospital. The Inspector of Factories visits to inspect the machines used at the hospital. During the year almost every three months a baby is born in the hospital. The Mental Health Act 1930 is passed

 


  

1931


John DODDS hospital mason dies while in service. Relatives are not allowed to visit patients as there is an outbreak of “Spotted Fever” in the county. The first female patient was compulsory admitted under the new Mental Health Act. On the 13th of April the first  ever voluntary patient was admitted.

 


 

1932


Due to an outbreak of smallpox visitors are not allowed to enter the hospital if they come from North shields, Howden, Percy Main and Wallsend. Dr ILLINGWORTH applies for a “motor house” to be erected. 26 patients enjoy a day out in Cresswell In August Annual sports day held. Due to overcrowding on the female side two additional night nurses are recruited.  a female member of staff commits suicide at Newbiggin. Annual concert given by female staff.


 

1933


Influenza outbreak male staff are given overtime. Concern is expressed that 7 males nurses are living outside  at  considerable distance from the hospital. Three male nurses are employed due to male overcrowding.


 


 

1934


Mr WATSON resigns  his position as visiting dentist and is replaced by a Mr. Norman HERRON.  Miss Catherine Hag MILLIGAN  of Littlemore Hospital Appointed as 2nd Assistant Matron The hospital holds a sale of work to raise funds for materials.

 


  
1935


An Admiral SPENCE visited the hospital to inspect service men. The Morpeth Pipe Band give a performance in the hospital The Committee of Visitors with their officers from Ryhope Hospital make a visit. An additional medical officer is requested to help with outpatients at the Royal Victoria Hospital. John BRUMWELL appointed visiting surgeon, There have been four separate trips to Cresswell  Bay in which 120 patients took part. Special entertainment was organised for “working Patients” A football match took place between patients from Stannington Mental Hospital and St. George’s.  St. George’s lost 3-6. a replay took pace in January 1936 unfortunately St. George’s lost 2-0

 


 

1936


Rev. John Dixon CALDWELL  replaces Rev. J. w. ALLEN Who resigns.  Miss MILLIGAN  2nd asst. Matron resigns. It is minuted that female nurses can be employed up-to 30 years of age. A Mr GARVIE has been appointed as head attendant at Canterbury Mental hospital. 36 staff apply for  housing on site. First report of a   hospital pantomime.


 


 

1937


A Mr. DICKINSON gives a talk to staff on air raid precautions. A captain JACKSON makes a visit o service men.
The football team gets revenge on Stannington when they won 6-1. A inquest was held on a patient who was fatally injured in the woods? all animals on the farm were slaughtered due to an outbreak of foot and mouth.


 


 

1938

 

There is reported by the medical superintendent a shortage of female nurses. a Captain COATES visited the hospital to check on air raid precautions. A type writing machine obtained for a Mr SANDERSON’S office. A female nurse is sent to Walker Gate Hospital wit nasal Diptheria.


 


 

1939


Dr RUBENSTEIN appointed assistant medical officer. Extensions required of 18 rooms at the nursing home are urgently required. A visit took place inspecting villa 1 and a female ward for possible use for civilian casualties in the event of war. Staff are now being called up. In December 25 sick soldiers are expected.
